Dirty Lenses

“Don’t call the world dirty because you forgot to clean your glasses.” ~ Aaron Hill

Are your glasses dirty? Not the physical ones…your mental & emotional glasses. The lens covering your mind’s eye. Have the trials & tribulations of life distorted your view? Perspective is everything. How we perceive information dictates how we respond. And our perspectives are experience driven. Our unique experiences influence how we see and interpret the world. As a result, getting people to agree on anything is extremely difficult. We formulate our opinions based on our own unique experiences, which often lead to misunderstandings. Dirty lenses make every situation appear worse than it really is.

“We must clean the lens of our hearts to see the state of our souls. However, too often the former is too dirty to even know that the latter exists.” ~ Craig D. Lounsbrough

Your mental lens is the gateway to your soul. When you have a tainted view of the world negativity runs rampant. It erodes your heart and poisons your spirit. Your bitter disposition will cause others to not want to be around you. In order to correct this, you must do what’s necessary to give your mental & emotional glasses a deep cleaning. This requires introspection. How did you develop your perspective? What traumatized your internal lens? Betrayal? Fear? Unrealized dreams? Viewing life through dirty lenses makes it difficult to view situations objectively. Don’t allow your future decisions to be influenced by an unhealed past. Understanding who you are and why you do what you do will help facilitate healing. Make the decision to do what’s necessary to discard the baggage of the past.

“What we should focus on are not events or people or things, but our thoughts that control how we see the world through our lens.”

~ J.R. Rim

Our thought life has a major impact on how we view the world. Negative thoughts beget negative viewpoints. Positive thoughts correlate with positive outlooks. Optimism begets optimism. For this reason, it’s imperative you gain control over your thought life. Random thoughts are unavoidable and can be beneficial in creative spaces. But you must make the effort to reign in your thoughts when they head in a negative direction. When dark thoughts enter your mind, place an imaginary choke chain around them, cutting off their oxygen before they get a chance to run rampant.

“We must look at the lens through which we see the world, as well as the world we see, and that the lens itself shapes how we interpret the world.” ~ Stephen R. Covey

Our lenses can get muddy during storms, resulting in a tainted view of people, opportunities, and life. Being able to see the big picture will help you gain a different perspective. A perspective that isn’t distorted by emotional baggage from the past. If you find your mental & emotional lens to be dirty, take the steps necessary to remove the residue clouding your judgement. Once the residue has been removed, you may come to the realization it’s time for a new prescription as well. A prescription coated in all things good. Hope. Love. Prosperity. Joy. Peace. How you view the world determines your destiny. 20/20 vision is a must.
