When Life Gets Hard

“He knows not his own strength who hath not met adversity.” ~ William Samuel Johnson

Adversity is revealing. It’s one of the many mirrors life places in front of you to show you who you really are and what you’re made of. Exuding peace & stability is easy when times are good, the sun is shining on you, and blessings are plentiful. It’s when your world goes dark that you find out how much strength you possess. Adversity is a great teacher of things we would prefer not to learn. Adversity reveals the character of the people in your life as well. When the going gets tough, many of the people you thought would always be there will get going. It’s amazing how unattractive you can become when you’re broke. When your bank account is in the negative, and friends & family lack the ability to help you, it’s easy to drown in self-pity. But never lose hope. It’s only a test, and your testimony will be the result.

“That which does not kill us makes us stronger.” ~ Friedrich Nietzsche

Our mental toughness is built in the struggle. The more obstacles you overcome, the stronger you become psychologically. Each storm enables you to maneuver through new storms with greater ease. With each storm comes wisdom, experience, and increased confidence. The road gets muddy during the storm, but as you trudge your way through, the resistance will build your strength, both physically & mentally. The more we’re challenged, the more we grow.  It’s all a part of the process

“Sometimes our light goes out, but is blown again into instant flame by an encounter with another.” ~ Albert Schweitzer

I can’t emphasize enough the importance of surrounding yourself with good people who love and want the best for you. Our lights can be the dimmest when facing adversity, so you need other light bearers in your life to stand in the gap for you when you’re at your lowest point. Not everyone has a trusted friend to lean on when life gets hard. Many can turn inward and push forward despite this shortcoming. But for those who need help, don’t be too proud to ask for it. No matter what you’re dealing with, there are numerous organizations willing to provide mental & emotional support.

“Once you choose hope, anything’s possible.” ~ Christopher Reeve

Never give up hope. Hope is powerful. Hope can power you through your weakest moments. If you choose to believe in your heart that this, too, shall pass, and that the best is yet to come, you’ll be able to continue pushing forward. It may be raining on your side of the street now, but it won’t always be that way. The key is to keep putting in the work to improve your situation. If you work hard, make good decisions, and keep God first, the positive results will come. As the saying goes, “tough times never last, but tough people do.”
