Spiritual Eye Candy: Look Beyond the Surface

“For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7

In a superficial world where the importance of physical beauty is emphasized in everything from television to advertising to fashion, it’s extremely easy to lose sight of the simple phenomenon that is inner beauty. In our society tangible appearance overshadows the intangibles, and the more someone meets the defined cultural standards of beauty, the more attention they receive. Those deemed beautiful are showered with money, gifts, adoration, and special privilege. It’s also quite common for attractive people to be given a pass when they display unattractive behavior. Numerous articles have been written explaining why attractive people fair better in life. These preconceived notions have led to more job offers, more opportunities for promotion, higher salaries, and more romantic opportunities. This could lead one to believe looks are everything, but this couldn’t be further from the truth.

“It’s that heart of gold & stardust soul that make you beautiful.” ~ R.M. Broderick

Energy is everything, and a beautiful heart is magical. Possessing a heart of gold, a person with a beautiful soul is spiritual eye candy. Authentic and not self-serving, they demand attention effortlessly, for the light they emit can’t be ignored. Their aura can change the atmosphere in a room in a good way, and it makes you want to be around them. A person with a beautiful spirit is compassionate, supportive, empathetic, encouraging, humble, and their hearts are always open to receive & give love. Neither selectively nice, nor the type to only be nice if they feel they have something to gain from it, they’re always ready with a warm smile. They build you up, look for the best, and bring out the best in people. Despite their own struggles, they offer a sincere, nonjudgmental ear to anyone who needs it.

A bad attitude diminishes looks.

Unfortunately, there are people who pretend to possess these characteristics as a tool of manipulation. Opportunists, driven by ego and greed, will emulate these traits to push their agenda to gain influence & control. But a discerning spirit can tell the difference. Some are more covert, but in most cases, if you simply close your eyes & mouth, and listen, they’ll reveal everything you need to know. We must pay close attention because beauty can temporarily blind us to negative, narcissistic behavior. I’m guilty of making excuses for the ones I liked, despite the glaring evidence they weren’t good for me, so I’m speaking from experience. Don’t ignore the signs.

“Beauty is not in the face; Beauty is a light in the heart.” ~ Kahlil Gibran

A person with a beautiful soul is spiritual eye candy to someone mature enough to recognize the intangibles. Looks can be deceiving, and for this reason we must look beyond the surface to see the heart of a person. We must pay close attention to ensure their words and their actions are in alignment. Your soul will thank you.
